SAT-ACT
Course Description
Teaching Philosophy
Rather than simply “teaching to the test” instructors prepare students to succeed in their classes
at school. Students become more efficient readers and stronger critical thinkers; skills they will
use throughout their academic careers and their professional lives.
Course Description
• All groups are capped at a maximum of 10 students.
• Course is 12 classes; each class is 2 hours. 12 hours of English and 12 hours of math.
• All course materials are included.
• Copies of actual exams are used for all instructions and homework.
• All class material is accessed electronically; therefore, students must bring to class their fully
charged personal laptops or iPads.
• All classes are recorded so they can be readily accessed by students who were absent or those
students who want to review the material.
Course Goals
• To improve the student’s knowledge base in both the English and math sections.
• To reduce test anxiety by providing proven strategies to answer each type of question.
• To provide reliable strategies for problem solving.
• To provide insight into the differences between the different test questions.
• To teach test taking skills, time management, and shortcuts for each type of test question.
• To teach how to recognize predictable wrong answer traps.
(These tests do not have trick questions, but they are loaded with trick answers.)
Classwork
During sessions, time is evenly distributed between the English and math sections, meaning one
hour of teaching for each section. However, if a student needs more help in one area, time can be
allotted on a per student basis, in order to help the student overcome any deficiencies.
Homework
It is of paramount importance that students complete all assigned work between classes to
achieve optimal progress. Failure to come to class is not an excuse for failure to do the work.
Distinctive Advantage of the Orduñez/Maza Team
In most, if not all, other SAT/ACT courses, one instructor teaches both portions of the test,
(English and math), and unfortunately, many times that instructor does not even have a valid
teaching certificate. With the Orduñez/Maza team, you get instructors who each has over 25
years of experience preparing students for these important standardize tests. When researching
who you are going to hire for SAT/ACT tutoring it is very important not only to ask for all the
details of the course, but also who actually teaches the course and their qualifications.
In that category, the Orduñez/Maza team is unique.
SAT or ACT? Which one is to take?
Some students perform better with the additional time provided on the SAT, even though the
material is more rigorous, while other students benefit from the less challenging material on the
ACT, even though they are given less time for each question.
The bottom line – Students should take both exams in order to improve their chances.
All classes are held at the office of Flores Tutoring, 10300 Sunset Drive, Miami 33173
